About HomeOffTheGrid

Hello, I’m JD, welcome to my blog!
For most of my life, I have been concerned about the environment. As a teen, my main interest as on energy. In college, I got inspired by the book, Diet For A Small Planet, and I tried vegetarianism for an entire year. I care about a lot of environmental topics now, including climate change, water, and wildlife conservation.  I am very much interested in sustainable living. Since first conceiving of the idea of renovating a distressed property into a home that had a minimum negative impact on the environment, too many years have gone by, to the point where it’s 2018 and I’ve decided it is time to take some real action.

The goals I have for this project:

  • Purchase of a cheap distressed property with enough land for sustainable gardening/homesteading.
  • Completing a renovation that makes the home more environmentally-friendly.
  • Make lifestyle decisions that are environmentally sustainable, while creating financial stability.
  • Chronicle the project here in this blog with video, photos, text, etc.
  • Facilitate audience participation in the process along the way.
  • Develop habitat especially for Karner Blue and monarch butterflies, bees, bats, and their friends.
  • Inspire Others to make their homes more environmentally sustainable.

I’m the Editor-in-Chief at GreenActionNews, where we tell the stories of what activists are working on to bring about change on the policy level. Their work is imperative to the global environmental crisis we are facing today. In addition to this kind of essential work, I know that the little things we do as individuals to reduce our negative impact on the environment add up to make a big difference. And I really believe it takes efforts at both ends of the policy to personal effort spectrum.  With HomeOffTheGrid, I hope to do my part on the personal end of that spectrum and inspire and motivate more people to integrate off-grid practices into their homes as well.

General Renovation Strategy

  • Get into financial position to purchase the property and to finance to renovations debt-free.
  • Bringing the home up to code so that I can live in the home during the rest of the project.
  • Renovate System by System – sewage, waste, water, energy, heating/cooling.
  • Build a sustainable garden
  • Landscaping for wildlife
